We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. Hermit Mode is a period in anyone's life where depending on a situation you lock yourself away without telling anyone. Usually in Hermit Mode you restrict yourself from social networking sites and people in general. There's many reasons why you'd go into hermit mode such as depression, anxiety, boredom of company, stressed or he/she may haw studying to do but end up playing games anyway.

By definition, Hermitude have made some bloody certified bangers in their time.

‘The Buzz,’ a cut off their 2015 album Dark Night, Sweet Light, made more appearances at festivals and in-between sets all over the country than the duo themselves did. Their pulsing remix of Flume’s ‘Hyperparadise’ features one of the most blood pumping drops of the decade in Australian music; both raking up over 56 million streams on Spotify alone.

We know Hermitude can write a track that explodes in vein of a thousand fireworks but their latest album, Pollyanarchy, takes a different route.

Hermitizing

“We sort of came off the back of Dark Night, Sweet Light that was quite an energetic record and we’d done a lot of touring over two or three years, and the idea for us was, I guess, we always try to push ourselves into an area that we haven’t been before,” Hermitude told Drive.

“That was the whole idea with collaborating with lots of vocalists but also I think that’s just the mood and feeling we had at the time coming off the back of being on the road - playing a lot of big festivals, shows in Europe and America - I think we were just feeling mellow, we wanted to write a more introspective record.”

Hermitizing

Pollyanarchy is more sky of twinkly stars than exploding fireworks, opting to shimmer across 11 tracks instead of having a drop pull the focus.

Despite being constantly on the go, Hermitude have always kept their finger on the pulse of buzzy up and comers; with this record acting as a definitive ‘who’s who’ of rising stars.

Their lead track ‘Stupid World’ features Bibi Bourelly, an American-German multi-talent who co-wrote Rihanna’s iconic ‘Bitch Better Have My Money,’ along with songs for Usher, Lil Wayne and Mariah Carey. She also makes another appearance later on track five, ‘Phew.’

Sitting next door is Roc Nation signee Vic Mensa (a clear fan of Aussie musos) who defines ‘Dusk Till Dawn’ with his signature drawl and seamless flow.

Speaking of the collab, Hermitude said, “we found this beat that was ‘Dusk Till Dawn’ and was vibing on it. [Vic] kind of just hit record straight away and just started singing all these melodies straight off the top of his head, and we were there filming it like man this is so good, it’s perfect for the song.

What is a hermitage

“That’s how it started, he basically had all these melodic ideas and just had that as one track in the studio and then went back and wrote lyrics to the whole thing, and it formed the story.”

Over in LA, the producers found themselves hanging out and writing music at Buddy’s studio with BJ The Chicago Kid, in what was one of the most fun sessions they had.

Buddy, being a “whirlwind,” laid down his first verse pretty immediately but almost didn’t get to the second verse.

“They were vibing so hard BJ was just like, ‘let’s do 20!’ and they did 20 push ups. Then Buddy got up and had a massive head spin, sat down on the couch and passed out.”

Chaos and all, the team ended up pulling it together for the vibe heavy single ‘OneFourThree.’

Pollyanarchy sees Hermitude finding calmness in the chaos, boldly shifting to a new sonic palette that sees vocalists step in front of their sophisticated production.

“We really wanted to do an album with a lot of vocalists on it because that’s something we’ve never really done before. We just approached it by writing a lot of beds of songs that we thought would work well, so we left a lot of space for people, and then we just started looking at people who we really enjoy their music and their artistry. We reached out via social media or official channels [and] did a lot of sessions over in the states; some of it was gold and some of it wasn’t.”

It feels like a natural evolution for one of Australia’s most beloved dance acts, never dismissing talent found in their backyards either.

From big ticket US names to the thriving energy of Electric Fields and bouncy, gang vocals of Haiku Hands, there’s a lil something to catch your eye on Pollyanarchy, no matter how you look at it.

Hermitude’s fourth studio album Pollyanarchy is out now on all major streaming services. You can also catch them on tour in November.
