If you’re not an Animal Crossing New Horizons player, you might be wondering what the heck a mush log even is.

And if, like me, you’ve been playing ACNH since March, you’re happily crafting those mushroom logs in the game on the regular right now.

Tangent before the tutorial: I have never played Animal Crossing until this year and never understood the obsession with it. Give me a Zelda game any day! When lockdown started 1200 years ago, or I guess really it was March, I immediately decided to give ACNH a try, because there was suddenly nowhere to go and nothing to do.

My immediate response was meh because a) there doesn’t seem to be a point to the game and b) it felt like the real life hustle of buy a house, fill it with crap, upgrade to a bigger house and then fill it with more crap. Games are an escape and I wasn’t sure ACNH felt like that for me…

But I was totally drawn in by the cute animal characters! You knew that was going to happen, didn’t you? Anyway, still playing 7 months later and have found Animal Crossing New Horizons to be a delightful way to alleviate the constant low-level anxiety that 2020 has delivered.

When I decided to go ACNH for this tutorial, I knew I was hooked!

Even if you don’t play the game, you’re going to enjoy this tutorial because it’s got some colorful, fun, autumn vibes! Can tree stumps be cute? If so, get ready to paint a cute tree stump! And some extra adorable mushrooms.

One of my favorite things these days is to play around with unusual colors, so while we’re going for autumn vibes in this tutorial, we’re going with an unusual color palette of orange, blue and purple.

We will use some Procreate acrylic brushes to layer in color on the tree stump and then we’ll use one of my all time favorite native Procreate brushes, the dry ink, to draw some mushrooms and add some sweet details to make this piece special.

Now, I’m using the new acrylic brushes from this Trailhead Designs Ultimate Brush Toolbox. This is a fairly new set and I cannot stop singing its praises.

First, the brushes are gorgeous and textural and there are so many of them! Mediums included are: acrylic, airbrush, charcoal, crayon, gouache, ink, marker, oil, pastel, pencil, watercolor, texture, and surface. It’s kind of crazy how many brushes there are!

Second, this brush set contains brush for all the most-used apps: Procreate, Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer. And that’s a big deal because if, like me, you work between a couple of different apps and have been frustrated by not being able to find similar brushes for each app, this brush set solves that.

In the past, I’ve been so frustrated by how poorly my Photoshop brushes import into Procreate. They just never work quite the same because the brush engines are so different. I can happily switch back and forth between Photoshop and Procreate now and not spend an entire day fiddling around with brushes or getting frustrated and giving up.

But now!

It’s such a good brush set!

Alright, let’s talk tutorial!

As always, this Procreate tutorial is beginner friendly, but it does assume that you have a working knowledge of Procreate.

WHAT SUPPLIES ARE YOU USING?

For this video, I’m using Procreate 5x, a 12.9 inch iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil.

I get a ton of questions about which iPad to buy and my answer will always be the same: get the biggest one you can afford. And no matter what size your iPad is, make sure it’s compatible with the Apple Pencil. Having tested a few other styluses, I can tell you that nothing beats the Apple Pencil. It’s so comfortable to draw with, I wish I could use it with my Cintiq as well!

To follow along with this tutorial, you’ll need 3 brushes:

  • Procreate’s 6B Pencil

  • Procreate’s Dry Ink

  • Trailhead Design’s Acrylic Flat Unloaded Brush

If investing in a new brush set isn’t a thing you want to do right now, use what you already have. Find a brush with a nice bit of dry brush texture and get painting. Procreate’s native brushes are truly robust, so you can probably find a good brush among those.

DO I HAVE TO USE PROCREATE FOR THIS?

Nope! You can follow along with any digital art app because the basic principles are the same. You can use this technique in apps like Photoshop, Fresco, Affinity Photo and Procreate. Basically any digital art app that provides pressure sensitivity is just fine for making art like this.

And if you’re using the Trailhead Designs Ultimate Brush Toolbox, you can use the same brush I’m using, even if you’re not working in Procreate!
